If you are interested in SEO and back-linking, you know that getting quality backlinks is essential for good SEO.

Google has recently confirmed that backlinks are the No. 1 ranking factor in 2019, with excellent content. No wonder link building is one of the main SEO strategies to improve the positioning and traffic volume of a website!

By definition, a backlink is an inbound link from any other website or blog.

However, not all backlinks are of equal quality. Forget the saying: “The better there is!” It does not work for links, at least as long as “more” means you buy or get links without checking if they are low quality or risky.

Because you have to know that Google has strict rules for creating links. Some incoming links may be considered a violation of his instructions to webmasters, and a manipulation of his search algorithm.

When developing a back-linking strategy, you must be careful. While a quality backlink can increase the SEO of a website, bad incoming links can penalize it.

Fortunately, there are still many ways to create quality backlinks safely. Everything is a matter of relevance and concentration on the user.

1 – The so-called “natural” editorial links

These backlinks are given by sites and web pages that spontaneously link to your content or your business. Obtaining them does not require any specific SEO action, apart from the creation of quality content and the ability to give them visibility.

2 – The link building

These backlinks are obtained by buying a link, contacting influencers and journalists or submitting the site to web directories. The creation of these inbound links can as much consist of posting a guest article on another site, as to convince a professor that your content is worthy of interest for a publication.

3 – The non-editorial links called “self-created”

These backlinks are obtained through the hundreds of thousands of websites that offer the possibility to their visitors to create links via guestbook signatures, forum posts, blog comments or user profiles. These links offer the lowest value, but can globally have a positive impact on SEO in case they are created in a relevant way. Typically, search engines penalize websites that aggressively pursue these backlinks because they view them as spam. They must therefore be integrated into an SEO strategy of back-linking with caution.

❌ Abuse links exchanges

Avoid links like “Link to my site from yours and I’ll do the same”.

❌ Include links with the same anchor text optimized in many marketing articles or press releases

In the era of Google Penguin, which is now part of Google’s core algorithm, you can not use abusive SEO techniques such as the keyword stuffing (French keyword stuffing). If you create links with the same anchor tag on thousands of websites, Google may interpret it as spam.

❌ Add your site to a directory only to get a backlink

Some directories do not provide any real value to users and Google has excluded them from its search results.

❌ Leave unnecessary comments on forums and blogs

For example, avoid comments like “Good article”, “This post helped me” or “Thank you, it’s great! – Paris SEO Agency ».

❌ Abuse guest articles

Not that publication of articles on other sites is prohibited, but some bad practices can harm your back-linking SEO strategy. It is more than advisable to avoid publishing the same article on different sites, to publish many articles on the same site or to publish articles without added value.

Do not let a website duplicate your content in exchange for a link, without adding a rel = “canonical” and a rel = “nofollow”.

❌ Buy links

Search engines clearly state that buying backlinks to improve the ranking of a website violates their guidelines.

Although Google and Bing can not penalize all paid links, they spend a lot of time and resources finding ways to detect them. Paid links of poor quality therefore pose an extremely high risk of penalty for your website.
